problems -

Note that the starting handle has a rotating cover over the handle. This often seizes, but the rust can be removed easily by lightly tapping across the surface with a small hammer until it moves again.

Occasionally when starting, the motor may make a whining noise but fail to turn the engine. This may be caused by the battery running low or by dirt in the starter motor. If the latter, remove, clean and lightly oil the Bendix gears.

Sluggish operation may also be due to an electrical fault in the starter motor - check the starter motor switch contacts for burning and the starter motor for partial shorts.

other notes -

Remax part number SB31 apparently contains pinion and sleeve assemblies for the starter motor.

Lucas starter brush kit part #255,659 may be suitable for this starter motor.
